SUSTAINABILITY

Go Down

Bali Hai is committed to having a lasting positive impact on the environment and communities in which we operate. This is why we’ve invested heavily in waste reduction technology, removed harmful single-use plastics from our operation, and partnered with global pioneers in marine sustainability, Mars Inc., to build Indonesia’s largest artificial reef.

OCEAN CONSERVATION

We are blessed to be able to operate in one of the most diverse marine environments on earth, and it’s our intention to keep it that way. We have been conducting marine surveys on the reefs around the island for 20 years, and this research has been used to support the establishment of Marine Protected Areas. Bali Hai has also teamed up with global sustainability leader, Mars Sustainable Solutions, to build Bali’s largest artificial reef system. In just 3 years we have laid down more than 1,000 individual reef regeneration structures (Reef Stars) that act as nurseries for hundreds of coral and fish species.

For over a decade Mars Sustainable Solutions has been developing a simple solution to help restore damaged coral reefs, in partnership with local communities, scientists, businesses, NGOs and governments around the world. This solution is referred to as the ‘Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System’, deploying webs of Reef Stars (hexagonal structures) to stabilize loose coral rubble and provide a platform for coral to grow.

The website MARS Coral Reef Restoration captures the journey, the impact and scale achieved to date, and the people who have helped make this happen all in one place. Bali Hai Cruises is proud to be part of that selected group and is looking forward to continue that journey together.

WATER MANAGEMENT

In line with our vision for sustainability, we’ve made huge strides in waste recycling and water management. Our resort’s desalination unit allows us to produce 50,000 litres of fresh water per day, enough to provide water to all our guests. We also utilize a self-sustaining bio save system to ensure that we can recycle wastewater and reduce our reliance on local groundwater reserves.

PROSPEROUS COMMUNITIES

We have been employing, training, and supporting the people of Lembongan, Penida, and Gili Trawangan for more than 30 years. Today, our goal is to ensure that tourism supports the development of thriving communities. To this end, we have invested in new schools, educated thousands of children on the dangers of plastic pollution, and provided emergency support during times of need.

THE FUTURE

We are constantly looking for new ways to improve our impact on the globe. We have taken great strides to achieve our vision of sustainability over the years, but we know that the work is never truly done.
