Bali Hai Cruises Celebrates Earth Day 2026 with Mangrove Planting, Coral Reef Restoration & Underwater Clean-Up

Published: April 22, 2026 | Bali Hai Cruises

On April 22, 2026, the Bali Hai Cruises team came together to honour Earth Day with a hands-on conservation effort at Nusa Lembongan Island. The initiative brought crew members, marine enthusiasts, and local partners together for a meaningful day of giving back to the ocean and coastline that have been at the heart of our operations since 1990.

Planting 100 Mangrove Seedlings for a Greener Coastline

The day kicked off with the planting of 100 mangrove seedlings along the shores of Lembongan Island. Mangroves play a critical role in protecting coastlines from erosion, providing nursery habitat for marine species, and absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By expanding mangrove coverage around the island, we are investing in a natural defence system that benefits both the local ecosystem and the communities that depend on it.

Coral Reef Restoration in Partnership with Mars Coral Reef Restoration

Coral reef restoration has been a long-standing commitment for Bali Hai Cruises. Building on the success of our ongoing collaboration with the Mars Coral Reef Restoration Program, our divers deployed additional Reef Stars on the seabed surrounding Nusa Lembongan. These hexagonal steel structures, designed to stabilise coral fragments and accelerate reef recovery, have already proven their effectiveness. To date, Bali Hai Cruises and Mars Global have planted over 6.000 Reef Stars around the island, contributing to a growing underwater garden that supports biodiversity and strengthens reef resilience.

This Earth Day session added to that momentum, reinforcing our belief that healthy coral reefs are essential not only for marine life but also for the livelihoods of island communities who rely on the ocean for food, income, and tourism.

Underwater Clean-Up: Removing Marine Debris from Lembongan Waters

The final activity of the day was an underwater clean-up dive around the reef and harbour areas of Nusa Lembongan. Volunteer divers collected plastic waste, discarded fishing lines, and other debris that pose a threat to coral, sea turtles, and fish populations. Every piece of rubbish removed from the ocean is a step toward preserving the crystal-clear waters that make Lembongan Island one of Bali's most treasured destinations.

Why It Matters: Sustainability at Bali Hai Cruises

Since establishing operations in 1990, Bali Hai Cruises has been deeply connected to the waters and islands of Bali. As the island's original cruise experience, we recognise our responsibility to protect the marine environment that makes every voyage special. Earth Day is a reminder that conservation is not a one-off event but an ongoing commitment woven into how we operate every day.

From coral restoration and mangrove planting to reducing single-use plastics on board our vessels, sustainability is part of the Bali Hai Cruises journey. We invite our guests, partners, and the wider community to join us in caring for the ocean, one reef star, one seedling, and one dive at a time.
